Best Pellets for Ground Beef

We recommend the strong, smoky hardwoods of Mesquite or Hickory to enhance the beefy flavors in this recipe. Mesquite Hardwood has notes of spiciness while Hickory Hardwood gives off a bacon like aroma.

This recipe recommends cooking with a cast iron skillet. Be sure to check out the latest Pit Boss Cast Iron Cookware for sale.

This recipe uses Pit Boss Pulled Pork Rub seasoning.

  1. Fire up your Pit Boss and preheat to 400°F. If using a gas or charcoal grill, set the temp to medium-high heat.
  2. In a cast iron Dutch oven, bring potatoes and just enough water to cover to a boil. Add salt and cook until tender, 12 to 15 minutes. Drain potatoes, and return to pot. Add cream cheese, butter, ½ teaspoon salt, ½ teaspoon black pepper, and mash until smooth. Set aside.
  3. Place cast iron skillet on grill and heat oil. Add onion and sauté 2 minutes, then add garlic and sauté until fragrant. Add ground beef, Pulled Pork Rub, and rosemary, and cook, stirring occasionally, breaking up the meat until browned.
  4. Sprinkle flour over beef and stir until combined. Add the broth and cook, stirring until thickened, about 3 minutes.
  5. Add a layer of peas over beef and sprinkle with parsley. Dollop mashed potatoes on top of peas and spread evenly.
  6. Increase temperature to 450° F. Cover and cook for 5 minutes, then top with grated cheese. Cover and cook and additional 5 to 7 minutes, until cheese is melted, and edges of potatoes begin to brown. Serve hot.
