  • 4 Servings
  • 15 minutes Prep Time
  • 20 minutes Cook Time

Looking for an excuse to use those holiday leftovers? This sweet and savory sandwich is perfect for just that! A Monte Cristo is a twist on the French's Croque Monsieur. It has layers of ham, turkey, and cheese and is dipped in a batter similar to French toast, and fried until golden. Served with powdered sugar dusting and jelly.

Cooking Method: This recipe can be made on a flat top griddle, in a pan on your stove top, or on your grill with a griddle attachment or cast iron pan. There's nothing holding you back from trying this recipe!

Ingredients

  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 2 tbsp butter, melted
  • 8 slices of white bread
  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/4 lb sliced turkey
  • 1/4 lb sliced ham
  • 8 sliced of gruyere cheese
  • Powdered sugar
  • Cranberry sauce

Tools

Directions

  • Preheat your grill to 350°F and add a griddle attachment or a cast iron skillet to achieve even heat distribution. Or, fire up your flat top gas griddle to a medium heat.
  • In a shallow bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, vanilla extract, and cinnamon until smooth.
  • Spread a thin layer of mayonnaise on one side of each bread slice. Then layer ham, turkey, and cheese on the mayonnaise sides of two slices of bread, and add together to form a sandwich.
  • Brush your cooking surface with melted butter. Dip each assembled sandwich into the egg/milk mixture, coating both sides evenly. Place sandwiches on the hot griddle, grilling for 3–4 minutes on each side until golden brown and cheese is melted.
  • Remove from heat and sprinkle powdered sugar lightly over the top of each sandwich. Serve immediately with cranberry sauce on the side for dipping.
